Here it is, the answer to space problems in your fridge. The Fridge Monkey from Mode Product Design is a flexible rubber mat designed to stack all sorts of bottles or cans. It allows you to regain that precious half of a shelf in your fridge without the threat of a collapsing stack of bottles or cans squashing your meringues.

The ribs have been sized and spaced and can be used to stack beer cans, bottles, mixers, water bottles and even wine or spirits. You can expect to see this cheeky monkey in shops everywhere soon.

Mode also has a wine rack that combines simplicity of form with the ability to hold a variety of bottle sizes. Not restricted to one type of bottle, the Fridge Monkey's ribs have been sized and spaced so it can be used to stack alcopops, mixers, soft drinks, water bottles and even wine or spirits. A firm that only launched its range of unusual gifts last year is already reaping the rewards after winning a major accolade.

Mode Associates, which is based in Cardiff, won the Made in the UK category in the annual Gift of the Year Awards with its innovative magnetic rubber fridge clock.

It was also shortlisted for an award with its rubber wine rack.

Fridge clock opens door

A Cardiff company is looking to accelerate sales following the crowning of its innovative magnetic rubber fridge clock as the UK's best made gift.

In a major coup for product design venture Mode Associates, its fridge clock beat off competition from hundreds of other innovative products to win the Made in the UK category at the Gift of the Year Awards 2006.

And its rubber wine rack was also shortlisted in the award's contemporary home accessory category.

The judging panel for the awards comprised some of the UK's leading retailer buyers, including Jay Seal of Debenhams, Jenny Spivey of John Lewis and Nicky Peel of Habitat.

Now the three directors of Mode, Alun Jones, Duncan Taylor and Kevin Champion, are hoping their award success will prove a catalyst for more retailers to stock their products

Mr Jones said, To win the Made in the UK award, and for the wine rack to be shortlisted, is fantastic for us. You are never really sure how the business is doing, until you get this sort of recognition and encouragement from the industry.

This has given us the confidence to take the business forward and we are already talking to a number of a major retailers. We also have new products in the pipeline, which will hopefully also go on to win awards.

He added, Having the badge of the Gift of the Year Award is extremely important, as it gives retailers the encouragement and confidence to back a product.

The company's wine racks and clocks, which retail at £20, are stocked in more than 30 specialist interior design and wine shops across the UK, including Nice and Melin Tregwynt in Cardiff and fashionable gift shops and wine retailers. Its fridge clock is also one the best sellers on the fashionable home accessories website wheredidyoubuythat.com

Since launching its products last year they have sold hundreds across the UK.

And Mode will soon add the colours of orange and charcoal to its clocks – alongside its current offer in pink, cream and pale blue.

The company will be exhibiting at two of the UK's leading product design events this autumn; 100% Design in London and Birmingham's Autumn Fair.

At the exhibitions Mode will unveil its latest product, the fridge monkey.

The new design is a rubber mat which allows bottles and cans to be stacked pyramid-style inside a fridge.

Mr Jones is confident the product will be a success. Things like bottles of beer and cans take up so much space when put in a fridge.

What the fridge monkey does is stack them efficiently… so freeing up more room inside a fridge.

Mr Jones said having an expanded range would make Mode, a more attractive proposition to larger retailers looking to stock their products.

Time really is money for a talented new South Wales design house whose first lifestyle product – a funky floppy rubber fridge clock – is now rolling off the production line.

Mode Product Design is a new design company launched by young product designers Duncan Taylor and Kevin Champion.

While Mode has already completed a number of design challenges for a range of blue chip customers, ranging from a luxury car manufacturer to construction equipment specialist, one Mode design that is really turning heads is the consultancy's new fridge clock.

Now in full-scale production at a Cardiff factory, Mode's Fridge Clock is made from soft rubber and magnetically attaches itself to a fridge, moulding itself around any contours.

The clock has already made an impact at UK household products trade fairs and is set to rack-up hefty sales in the coming months, with customers able to buy them directly from Mode or a range of outlets.

Mr Taylor said, It's a really upbeat piece which everyone just loves.

While it's not been the most technically challenging product we've worked on, it's certainly been the most fun.

Alongside the fridge clock, Mode has come up with what's thought to be the world's first rubber wine rack. Stuck on the wall of a kitchen or bar, wine bottles are held in place by rubber grips.

Mr Champion said It's perfect for showing off your best labels and again we're receiving a really enthusiastic response from people searching for something that little bit different for their home, restaurant or bar, adds Duncan.

The fridge clock is now in full production in Cardiff, where we can keep a close eye on quality.

The next stage is to embark on a major sales and marketing exercise, while the wine rack is also now being manufactured by the same supplier in the city, he said.

Mr Taylor has returned to Cardiff after enjoying nine years of industrial design, largely within the automotive industry. At Rover Cars, he was lead engineer responsible for the seating products for the new Mini, and in 1999 he provided design consultancy to Lotus Cars in Norwich and worked with the team developing the Aston Martin Vanquish.

Mr Champion, who has a first class degree with honours in industrial product design, and a masters degree in design, is a former awards short-listed entrant at the Ideal Homes Exhibition in London. He also has eight years experience in the consumer products and retail industry.

Finally, Alun Jones has joined the team to head up the sales and marketing. Alun has just returned to Cardiff from London after nine years of retail and management working for a number of blue chip companies.

Mode, which is based in Museum Place, central Cardiff, above the Kooywood fine art gallery, has received business support and marketing advice from Venture Wales, the leading provider of entrepreneurial support in Wales.

Dorothy Hosein, operations director at Venture Wales, said, Mode is probably the most talented young company that has been created in Wales in recent years. Its design solutions, both for its own products and the requirements of major players in the motor and UK industrial markets, are world-class.

Duncan and Kevin are two of the most talented young designers in their field and it is great that they have returned to their South Wales roots to launch Mode.

Their fridge clock is fun and funky and promises to be a huge hit for them.
